Wahlbeck et al. [ 2] show in a large register-based study from Sweden, Denmark and Finland that the life expectancy gap of 20 years for individuals with serious mental disorders compared to that in the general population is more or less unchanged, in spite of some progress in Denmark and Finland.
As a local authority, Stockton has the largest life expectancy gap of anywhere else in England.
The largest increases in the life expectancy gap were seen for people with other psychoses (14.8 to 22.7 years for males and 14.1 to 22.6 years for females) and stress or adjustment reactions (7.3 to 13.2 years for males and −0.2 to 9.3 years for females, table 2).
Although some studies have shown that the mortality rate has increased over time for people with schizophrenia, 14 15 only one study, based on data from Denmark, Finland, and Sweden, has examined changes in the life expectancy gap over time for a wider range of psychiatric conditions.
In the effort to close the life expectancy gap, an important clinical tool for primary care is the Australian Government funded annual well-person's health check (HC) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of all ages.

For men, the life expectancy gap is greater - nearly a decade, or 74 years in poorer areas compared to 83.3 years in richer ones.
Additionally, a decline of the life expectancy gap between males and females is assumed for all the countries under study.
For men, gun deaths account for 5.4 months of the life expectancy gap.
A similar trend was seen for men, with the life expectancy gap between the richest and poorest areas widening from nine years to about 9.8 years over the same period.
