The part of a sentence "expect a request" is correct and usable in written English.
You can use it when you anticipate the possibility of a request or suggestion being made. For example, "I expected a request to help with the project, but it never came."
When Wendy calls her sister back in Indiana from a pay phone, the sister is curt and suspicious, expecting a request for money or assistance.
