Given that linkage disequilibrium (LD) probably decays rapidly in E. globulus, as in most tree species (Thavamanikumar et al. 2013), it is likely that many more markers than we used (14,708 markers) would have been necessary to saturate the genome for exhaustive outlier marker detection.
Together, these results indicate that engrafted splenic T cells predominantly express exhaustive phenotypic markers.
One possible strategy is to first apply classification-based gene selection to significantly reduce the search space, followed by (exhaustive search) association-based marker identification.

The main difficulty is that the huge number of markers in a metagenome-wide association study prevents the exhaustive search of combinations of microbial markers, and the continuous form of such markers prevents the application of highly efficient computational tricks such as bit-wise operations that have been adopted in existing methods in genome-wide studies.
