Surprisingly, administration of generic antioxidants such as vitamin C, vitamine E or β-carotene has failed to convincingly alleviate fatigue and enhance performance in exhaustive exercise (reviewed in [3], [7] [11]).
Females finding and evaluating possible spawning sites before the low water level and rise of temperature, which both limit swimming performance and influence the physiological response to exhaustive exercise (reviewed by Kieffer 2000), is a potential hypothesis to be tested for explaining this behavior.
