Victoria Markham, director of the CEP and executive editor of the AAAS Atlas of Population and Environment, says one of the reasons for the study is that the United States, in a departure from other industrialized nations, is experiencing significant population growth and will continue to do so.
"Politicians who see immigration as a solution to their region's viability are shortsighted," said Sharon McCloe Stein, executive director of Negative Population Growth Inc., a population control advocacy group in Washington.
"Golf is good for 100 percent of the population, not just the 10 percent of the population that plays golf," said Mike Hughes, chief executive of the National Golf Course Owners Association.
