It is possible that the endothelial cell layer may also help to exclude very large molecules and blood cells and that a similar effect is exerted by the slit pores and diaphragm.
The cell number per single islet varies from a few cells to several thousand cells (Seino and Bell 2008), excluding very small or large islets and assuming an average diameter of approximately 150 μm.
