To assess the effect of temperature on expression, we compared the full model to a reduced model that excluded temperature.
By matching for outdoor temperature, we excluded temperature as a potential confounder in our models, and because control days were close to event days, we controlled for seasonal effects as well (Bateson and Schwartz 1999, 2001; Maclure and Mittleman 2000).

If the possibility of convection and advective heat transport by fluid flow in the Buntsandstein aquifer is excluded, temperatures are related to depth, thus thickness of the sedimentary cover, and the thermal gradient.
Given that this difference is apparently small, we repeated the stepwise analysis after excluding temperature as an independent variable.
A sensitivity analysis excluding temperatures below 35°C raised the mean temperatures but not the relative positions of the group means.
The mesophilic M. mazei MBF1 was included in this study in order to exclude temperature-dependent effects, which might be caused by expression in a mesophilic host (e.g. incorrect folding, missing activity).
In cells where all values from corresponding 8-day intervals were "missing" data, we excluded these temperature values from the subsequent spatial aggregation whenever possible.
From these downscaled climatic scenarios, we computed 19 so-called 'bioclimate' variables [ 71], but we excluded mean temperature of the wettest and driest quarters, and precipitation of the warmest and coldest quarters, owing to the spatial artifacts that emerge in these four variables.
Three systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) parameters were investigated (because most patients were ventilated, respiratory rate as a parameter was excluded): new temperature change to <36°C or >38°C, new increase in pulse rate to >90 beats per minute, and new change in leukocyte count to <4 >12 × 10 cells/L.
During a 40-seconds-long recording, we cannot exclude that temperature further decreased and hence the effective temperature change was larger than assumed by our conservative approach.
For example, the screening strategy for general SSI included: 1) continual fever (temperature ≥38.0C) for 2 days after surgery, but excluding a temperature within 72 hours after surgery (surgical fevers mostly occur during this time period); 2) positive microbiological examinations of surgical wound secretions; and 3) new antibiotic administration, excluding prophylactic use of antibiotics.
