WASHINGTON -- China's central bank took a potentially major step toward a more market-determined exchange rate on Aug. 11, when it announced a revision in the process for fixing the central parity exchange rate, the starting point for daily trading of the renminbi in the onshore market.
"Central Banks would intervene massively to maintain exchange rate parities if they came under pressure," he said.
This means that the corresponding associated matrices are similar after exchanging the parity nodes, as can be seen in Figure 4.
But the Bank's poverty line is calculated at purchasing-power parity exchange rates, not market exchange rates.
In the early 1990s Italy was the first to fall; after it toppled, Britain, Spain, Portugal and eventually France were forced to follow.Back then European politicians blamed declines in currencies on speculators who failed to understand that countries were committed to maintaining their exchange-rate parities.
As previously noted, when confidence in the fixed parity exchange rate drops and market participants expect a change in parity, short-term capital movements may be disequilibrating.
