Between the two sessions, the USCACA held a ceremony to present the 2012 Scholar Excellence Award to recognize outstanding achievements in cancer research.
To facilitate and strengthen collaborations among cancer researchers and physicians in the United States and China, the US Chinese Anti-Cancer Association (USCACA) and the US National Foundation for Cancer Research USNFCRR) have established the Scholar Excellence Award for the USNFCR-USCACA Scholar Exchange and Fellowship Program in Basic, Translational, and Clinical Studies.
Since 2010, 5 young Chinese researchers and physicians have received the Scholar Excellence Award for their outstanding achievements in cancer research performed while in the United States, as well as their continuous contributions to eradicate cancer after their return to China.
The 5 winners of the 2012 AFCR-USCACA Scholar Excellence Award are Dr. Xiu-Li Bi (Liaoning University, Shenyang, China), Drs. Bing-Hui Li and Li-Na Zhang (Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital, Tianjin, China), Dr. Yi Zhang (Soochow University, Suzhou, China), and Dr. Yu-Hua Zhao (Sichuan University, Chengdu, China).
It is ironic that the ERC's erstwhile president, Helga Nowotny, has long wrestled with the definition of excellence as a science policy scholar.
He was an old world scholar who demanded excellence from his students and in a very small class (six) it afforded an in-depth look into Rembrandt, with perhaps the greatest living Rembrandt scholar (and I might add no place to hide if you weren't prepared for the seminar or your turn at a presentation).
