The centre of excellence training network should include an intensive care unit, where trainees can gain experience starting, prescribing, managing and withdrawing CRRT in patients with acute kidney injury.
The support actions involve the development of tools to support the sites of excellence and networks.
The programme involved a combination of structuring actions (establishment of sites of excellence, national networks and dedicated clinical research assistants (CRAs)), support actions (tools, templates and training) and competitive budget allocation for sites or networks based on performance.
The results presented here about this innovative public-private partnership, set up in 2007, show that it is possible to improve the attractiveness of a particular country for industry-sponsored international clinical trials by developing the necessary sites of excellence and networks for clinical research.
This project is a joint activity of a recently created Research Network of Excellence (AIDS research network, RIS) funded by the Spanish Research Council which incorporates basic scientists, immunologists, virologists, clinicians, epidemiologists and statisticians.
