Common examples of symbols are the names for objects, letters, and numbers.

Next, on a large sheet of paper, each group should draw a minimum of ten examples of symbols or characters from their writing system in a chart that also shows the corresponding meanings or sounds that the images communicate.
Of course, natural languages are examples of symbol systems, but there are many other, non-linguistic systems: pictorial, gestural, diagrammatic, etc.
