Mountain Meadows, a two-hour drive from one of the state's popular tourist destinations, Zion National Park, is the site of what the historian Geoffrey Ward has called "the most hideous example of the human cost exacted by religious fanaticism in American history until 9/11".
He tells, for example, of hideous experiments performed on prisoners by Josef Mengele-like Japanese researchers during the World War II, and, in the late 1960's and 70's, the morally troubling concentration of blood collection centers in poor countries like Nicaragua, which became a source of blood products for the rich, industrialized world.
And it is free of the hideous ethnic cleansing seen in Myanmar's Rakhine state last month.
