A central survey site was set up in each residential committee or village and the participants were required to be interviewed and receive the health examination on-site.
At the site, the participants were interviewed face-to-face, and received health examinations on-site.
The overall malignancy risk for biologic-naïve participants was comparable to that expected on the basis of population rates but, on examination of site specific cancers, these patients had an elevated risk of melanoma (Observed = 5, Expected = 1.84; SIR 2.72 (95 % CI 1.13 to 6.53)) and lung cancer (Observed = 6, Expected = 2.41; SIR 2.49 (95 % CI 1.12 to 5.53)) (Table 2).
The three pilot study sites were located in Nanxiong city of Guangdong province, Dazhu county of Chongqing municipalities, and Tianmen city of Hunan province, as these surveillance points had oral examination facilities on-site and staff capable of performing oral examination (the location of three surveillance points are shown in Fig. 1).
