The poly(MPC) and poly(Me EG nMA) hydrogels with equilibrium water contents (EWCs) in the range from 86 to 97 wt% were prepared.
To investigate the relationship between the degree of salinity tolerance and the amount of ions available in the aquatic milieu of natural breeding sites, we plotted the LC50 of individual populations as a function of the average electrical water conductivity (EWC) measured in those breeding sites from which test larvae were collected in each locality (Fig. 4).
The four sets of multiplex microsatellite loci that were developed here for the first time will facilitate future studies of population genetics in EWC, including investigating phylogeographic patterns of postglacial expansion in North America, and studying the impacts of habitat fragmentation on population genetic structure and gene flow.
Shotgun pyrosequencing has proved to be effective for isolating microsatellite markers in EWC.
Importantly, coastal breeding sites were significantly more variable in EWC than inland ones (Bartlett test of homogeneity of variances: K = 68.04; d.f. = 1; P < 0.0001), regardless of type of habitat.

"The EWC should make a difference in terms of how [language school] representatives co-ordinate and communicate and pass on information," says Paul McGinty, a teacher at the Spanish language centre for more than 18 years.
