Maintaining natural rather than artificial patterns of selection might be particularly important during reintroduction because colonization of new environments offers special opportunities for adaptive evolution that can increase the likelihood of establishment and persistence (Reznick and Ghalambor 2001; Lambrinos 2004; Kinnison and Hairston 2007).
