Next, we bath-applied 10 nM, 100 nM, or 10 µM DA for 5 minutes and continued to evoke Up-states via hippocampal stimulation and/or trains of local EPSPs.
The low levels of DMSO in the media had no apparent effect on the membrane properties of the recorded neurons or the ability to evoke up-states via VTA stimulation (Fig. 6D).

Electrical VH stimulation evokes up states in NA neurons [12] and fornix or VH lesions eliminate these up states [12], [31], arguing for a strong hippocampal control of NA up states, but the data shown in Figure 4 suggest that PFC inputs may also exert at least a transient control over NA up states.
The latter is likely due to transient drive of NA neurons by bursting prefrontal activation, as in vivo intracellular recordings in anesthetized rats revealed that NA up states can transiently synchronize with spontaneous PFC activity and PFC stimulation with a bursting pattern reliably evoked up states in NA neurons.
However, the AgNano drinking solution itself (both concentrations) evoked up-regulation of FGF2 expression in the muscle, without enhancing the effect of in ovo injection.
Electrical stimulation of the VTA evoked Up-states in the PFC, which we recorded in current clamp mode from deep layer neurons (Fig. 2).
After recording a minimum of 20 EPSP trains in the Down-state, we evoked Up-states in the PFC via brief burst stimulation of the Hipp (3 5 pulses at 20 Hz) and repeated the local synaptic stimulation in the presence of these Up-states.
