A total of 14 genes show evidence for heterogeneous selection pressures across codons as evidenced by likelihood ratio tests that were significant at a nominal p-value of 0.05.
If this removal worsened the fit of the model significantly as evidenced by likelihood ratio tests, the variance component was kept in the model; otherwise, the variance component was removed from the model and the model selection pursued from this simpler model (Shoukri and Chaudhary 2007; Goldman and Whelan 2000; Shapiro 1988; see Appendix A for details).
