The new work, Marcus Gardley's "every tongue confess," has its trite moments, but the thirty-two-year-old playwright's talent is immense: he is a potentially great writer who has yet to write a great play.
When the script of "every tongue confess" lacks dramaturgical clarity, the actors tend to overact, and the director, Kenny Leon, encourages this by camping up the folklore of the play with stereotypically "black" behavior.
A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, he became interested in the themes of "every tongue confess" after reading Toni Morrison's novels and seeing reports of arson attacks on churches in Alabama in 2006.
The Cradle opened meanwhile with a world premiere of "every tongue confess," by the 33-year-old writer Marcus Gardley, a play about black life and church burnings in the South, with themes and characters that reflect Washington's predominantly black population.
