To commemorate the moment, the Costume Institute this month is staging a rare gathering — a kind of Oprah moment — a luncheon to honor as many of the "ethnic" models from that fabled event as can be gathered in one room.
Adjustments were made for: obesity, smoking status, units of alcohol per week, and ethnic group (model 2); model 2 plus mean SBP and DBP (from the four measurements of SBP and DBP), metabolic syndrome, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, glucose, ESR, and creatinine (model 3); model 3 plus ABI (≤0.9 vs >0.9; model 4); and model 4 plus the Framingham risk score (model 5).
The Mexican government consulted on the show with the goal of creating a positive ethnic role model.
"The ethnic ad model has not changed since the 1960s," says Jeffrey Bowman, head of OgilvyCulture.
"There was only one way I could see soccer progressing in this country, and that was to break away from the little ethnic club model," he says.
But mindful that the overwhelming majority of voters this year will still be Anglos, Mr. Sanchez is eager to sell himself as a kind of Hispanic Bill Cosby, an ethnic role model that others can be comfortable with.
