This Bayesian procedure was not used in the other experiments because, in our experience, the approach does not provide reliable estimates of threshold in psychophysically-inexperienced subjects (such as those tested in Experiments 2 to 6), probably because these subjects have high and variable lapse rates.
Our estimates of threshold nevertheless were similar to previous reports for AC thresholds for cVEMPs and oVEMPs, with the cVEMP i-p13 threshold being on average 7.1 dB lower than that for the oVEMP c-n10 response using individual records.
Although this difference in sensitivity may reflect the complexity of the task used, one factor that is liable to have affected estimates of threshold performance is the session-to-session variability observed within each species.
We ran the QUEST procedure before each session and did not end the procedure until stable performance was achieved, defined as an estimated threshold log-likelihood ≥ −2.5 under the assumption that unstable performance would shift the corresponding threshold and keep log-likelihoods lower (direct estimates of threshold across consecutive 20-trial blocks verified this assumption).

These estimates of thresholds, combined with actual assets observed to be owned for any given household, were used to produce an estimate of household-level wealth status.
Although definitions of thresholds may differ, it is encouraging to note that others' published estimates of thresholds for these same datasets are not dissimilar to estimates from the a b model, suggesting consistency with others' notion of an acceptable threshold.
Threshold parameters were well estimated in model (3) especially for the lowlands strata, as can be seen from Figure 4; that a uniform confidence band will also include the fitted estimates of thresholds in the separate age groups.
When the processes underlying the psychophysical function resulted in a constant true threshold, estimates of the threshold obtained by the three estimation procedures were similar to the true threshold.
Each offset level was sampled 12 times in one run, and a logistic function was fit to the data to obtain an estimate of threshold and bias.
Figure 1 shows the results averaged over all subjects; individual results for the patients are reported in Supplementary Figs 1 and 2. The space constant of the fit was taken as the estimate of threshold for the space bisection task.
On each iteration, the data for each subject were independently sampled (with replacement), drawing N independent samples from the N data points for that subject on that condition, to yield an estimate of threshold for each subject (capping thresholds to 25°, half the total distance).
