A recent meta-analysis, for example, estimated uptake of HIVST to be 87%% [ 41].
Based on these studies, improved models should be developed for estimating uptake of ionizable PPCPs into organisms and through food chains.
Although methods are available for estimating uptake of ionizable compounds into fish and invertebrates (e.g., Fu et al. 2009; Meredith-Williams et al. 2012), our understanding of the factors and processes that influence uptake of PPCPs from different environmental compartments into organisms is still less well developed than for nonionizable chemicals (Brooks et al. 2009).
Of all eligible participants, we assumed that 2.5% in any given year would undergo bariatric surgery, based on current estimated uptakes of this type of surgery in Australia (J. Dixon, personal communication), which was assumed to remain constant for the duration of the model (Table 1).
