(AP) -- Several thousand Occupy Wall Street demonstrators gathering in Oakland forced a halt to operations at the nation's fifth busiest port Wednesday evening, escalating a movement whose tactics had largely been limited to marches, rallies and tent encampments since it began in September.
The movement took a violent turn on Sunday night, when police used water cannon, batons and pepper spray to thwart demonstrators' attempts to "escalate" the movement by surrounding government offices.
At least three had been released just the night before from three days of extra-legal detention at the hands of Mr. Mubarak's police, and they vowed to escalate their movement.
One senior official said the major decision facing Putin was whether to "continue to escalate troop movements into other parts of Ukraine".
There was an edgy desperation in the late 1970s: the cold war was in deep freeze, the conflict in Ireland was escalating, the British Labour movement was tearing itself apart, and, in the streets, unemployed youth sported post-punk, multi-coloured mohican hairstyles.
