In the Northern Rocky Mountain (NRM) fishers have been the focus of Endangered Species Act (ESA) listing decisions.
Ultimately, collaborative conservation through multistakeholder engagement at various levels and scales led to proactive planning and implementation of conservation measures and precluded the need for an ESA listing of the Bi-State population of Greater Sage-grouse.
The proposals follow Republican bills and budget riders that would remove protections for gray wolves in the lower 48 states, exempt the greater sage-grouse from an ESA listing for 10 years, and increase state involvement in conservation decisions.
Washington is not alone: the fisheries agency says that it may give 13 different salmon species endangered status in a broad sweep of land from central California to the borders of British Columbia, potentially the most extensive ESA listing in the 20-year history of the act.

Representative Rob Bishop (R UT), said the Obama administration's approach is simply an ESA listing by another name.
"In dealing with uncertainty in ESA listing decisions there is no law that says you have to give the species the benefit of the doubt," said Melanie Rowland, a retired National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration attorney and ESA expert who was not involved in the listing decision.
