The difference may have been influenced by different eruption plume heights; heights of >1000 m characterize the sub-Plinian and vulcanian stages, while heights mostly <1000 m typify other stages (Table 1).
The potential impact associated with volcanic ash from Antarctic eruptions is mainly contingent on volcano location and eruption column height (h).
These well-known synoptic situations have implications on tephra dispersal patterns and anticipate distinct behaviors depending on the volcano location and eruption column height.
Eruption plume height (Fig. 2) was monitored with weather radar at Keflavík, 150 km to the west of the volcano, sampling every 5 minutes45, but six hourly values of mean and maximum height are presented.
Our results are based on measurements of tephra thickness on land in Iceland, records of tephra fallout outside Iceland, reconstruction of plume dispersal from satellite images, monitoring and mapping of ice melting, eruption plume height, grain size analysis of tephra, tephra grain morphology and chemistry of the erupted products.
The amount correlates weakly with eruption plume height.
However, after 17:40, the eruption plume height decreased to less than 2 km above the craters.

An assessment of the mass eruption rate, height and shape of the eruption column is made for each stochastic event in the catalogue.
