Turbo equalization is not optimal, as demonstrated in this article, but it is the best alternative amongst all iterative joint equalization and decoding solutions, as its constituent parts the MAP equalizer and the MAP decoder produce optimal posterior estimates about the respective coded and uncoded transmitted symbols.
In this sense, a MVUE approach is also a good candidate for equalization (moreover, computing the Smith form is not a systematic task, and represents an ill-conditioned factorization problem, similar to the Jordan form).
