Many countries in the subtropics and tropics, on the other hand, underutilize the prevention mechanisms [2] despite the year-round outbreaks and recent findings that (i) East and Southeast Asia act as a source of new influenza strains and transmission [3], [4], and (ii) epidemics timing in South America travels southward starting from the equator [5], [6].

Our analysis was focused on the apparent relationship between latitude and epidemic timing observed for type A but not type B influenza, where epidemic timing is measured by the mean epidemic week.

The observed relationship between epidemic timing and latitude is strengthened by several additional analyses we conducted (not shown).

To examine spatiotemporal patterns in type and subtype epidemics, the mean week of the epidemic was used as a measure of epidemic timing.

The most unanticipated finding of this study was the apparent positive relationship between latitude and epidemic timing for H3 and H1 (Figure 5).

Of note, the week of onset is a more arbitrary indicator of epidemic timing than the mean week, and more prone to measurement error.

However, no apparent difference in resistance emergence (Figure 6b), 7b)) or epidemic timing (Figure 5b)) results from this reduced supply for prophylaxis.
