The conventional and cumbersome method of demarcating census enumeration area (EA) has been characterized with several delineation challenges.
The first stage was a cluster of housing units called Enumeration Area (EA), while the second stage was the random selection of the housing units.
A complete listing of housing units and households in each selected enumeration area provided the frames of households (HHs) for the second stage selection in selected EAs.
During the 1970 census, residents on the road were counted as part of the Gowlands Ramp enumeration area.
The enumeration area was then divided into segments, so that each segment included approximately 80 people.
Maps of each selected cluster (i.e. enumeration area) were obtained from the census bureau.
Each standard enumeration area contained between 300 and 2000 adults according to the 2000 census.
Sampling started with the first randomly assigned enumeration area and all households were visited.
In each case, a ZDHS enumeration area was found within 30 km of the ANC.
For instance, if an enumeration area comprised 400 people then it would be divided into five segments.
The accuracies of the various population mapping procedures were tested principally using the enumeration area level census data for 50 Kenyan districts (figure 2).
