In agreement with entrainment, time-frequency (TF) analysis of EEG during α-TMS (TMS-locked averages) shows prominent α-power boosting in a narrow α-band centered on the stimulation frequency, which was emerging over pulses 3 5 following an initial broadband response (shown for CP4 in Figure 2A, α-TMS) and was topographically restricted to the target site.
However, MPS IIIB mice consistently differed from wild-type mice at all ages examined in their phase angle of entrainment (the time from the light offset to the onset of daily locomotor activity) (Fig. 4).
These findings are predicted to disrupt circadian rhythms and impair entrainment to external time.
This system keeps track of the external world rhythms through entrainment by various time cues, such as the light-dark cycle and the feeding schedule.
Although significant, the size of the correlation we found between tau and the phase angle of entrainment to sun time was modest, and we observed no racial differences in the phase angle of entrainment.
Phase angle of entrainment (difference between time of lights off and activity onset) was not significantly altered by photoperiod (Fig. 1E; F = 1.9, d.f. = 1,33; p > 0.15) nor by melatonin duration (F = 0.0; d.f. = 1,34, p > 0.80).
In addition, we wish to point out that our experiments share an important similarity with the above-mentioned investigations; all of these experimental systems retain the circadian mutant mice on normal light/dark cycles and subject these mice to entrainment from external time cues.
Here we show that PACAP-deficient mice exhibited severe dysfunctions of entrainment in a time-dependent manner.
