He reports that college leadership is severely constrained by college enrollments down by one million students nationwide since 2012, discount rates -- or the subsidy that colleges pay through discounted tuition to put students in their seats - rising, and technology innovations and the cost of campus wide capital investments.
Enrollment is down to about one thousand six hundred and fifty, due to demographics, but it's still bustling with teenage energy.
"I knew that the enrollment was down, but I had no idea that a decision to close was imminent," he said.
Crime is up, school enrollment is down, and one in four residents received food stamps in December, nearly a fourfold increase since 2006.
"The enrollment is down, and it's hard for me to imagine that they are going to continue to operate with that small enrollment," said Richard T. Olcott, the district's part-time superintendent.
And while enrollment is down, it better reflects the city's changing demographics, in that there are more Hispanic candidates, both at the seminary and in a program aimed at cultivating high school students for the priesthood.
Enrollment was down even as the liberal-arts school was accepting 65 percent of all applicants — a striking contrast to its rivals Amherst and Williams, which typically admit fewer than 20 percent of their applicant pools.
"Nobody called the parents to say, 'We're short on money, we might close, enrollment is down too much.' Nobody said any of that," said Mary-Ann Perry, president of the Federation of Catholic Teachers, which represents the 11 lay teachers on the faculty.
I'd be surprised if the final number of enrollments is down anywhere near as much as the applications".
