The aggregation of FITC results in the FITC molecule being dropped away from the silica layer as well as the field enhancement region of NPs and the previously enhanced fluorescence of FITC by Au1Ag4@SiO2 NPs were greatly quenched again due to the promoted distance between FITC molecule and metal NPs.
