"It takes six to nine months for a college graduate with training in digital engineering to be contributing to our products," Mr. Lowe said.
"I had no doubt I wanted to be in civil engineering, to be able to build something I could climb on and kick and see from a distance".
He added that the university would initially offer a Master of Sciences in information technology, with a Master of Sciences in electrical and computer engineering to be introduced by the second year.
That means learning enough computer science and software engineering to be able to design tools for information gathering, synthesis, analysis and circulation — or enough, at least, to see what technology can do for journalism.
