Goals of integrated STEM education include STEM literacy, 21st century competencies, STEM workforce readiness, and interest and engagement of students in STEM subjects.
Previous work established that the upregulation of repair-specific molecular signaling mechanisms, such as Notch, and successful engagement of resident muscle stem cells in tissue repair are largely determined by the age of the systemic milieu, rather than by the cell-autonomous age of muscle cells, or by the differences in their numbers (Conboy & Rando, 2005; Conboy et al., 2005).
While 2015 has seen the celebration of engagement in Stem subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths) this year it will be all about engagement in Steam (the A is for arts).
Particularly in real-world settings where educational software must compete with many other activities, determining whether or not design features are engaging students is a necessary component of evaluating their effectiveness, leading many to investigate behavioral and affective indicators of student engagement in STEM learning systems.
Thus, such programs can potentially bridge the opportunity gap that low-income youth face by providing enriched engagement and in turn increase the relevance of STEM learning (Afterschool Alliance 2011; Ejiwale, 2013).
Research infusion can also shift the tenor of STEM courses, eliciting student engagement (Gardner et al., 2011) and improving attitudes toward both STEM disciplines and scientific research (Nadelson et al., 2010; Brownell et al., 2012).
The results of the study show the success of fostering great user engagement in STEM learning.
Awareness of STEM careers is an essential precondition for engagement, self-efficacy, and a sense of relevance to develop; however, students often have limited understanding of available careers and requirements for success (Dorsen et al., 2006).
The association between evolution and many scientific and technological innovations suggests that deeper knowledge of STEM may be an effective way to address engagement at the societal level as well as research and development.
Our initial engagement with The Derby School eventually culminated in three lessons about the basics of stem cell biology, applications for regenerative medicine/biotechnology and the ethical implications of developing stem cell treatments (Table 1; Box 1).
