As expected, we detected a strong signal characteristic for piRNA-directed targeting (see Figure 1B), i.e. we found a relatively high frequency of sense-antisense pairs with a distance of 9 between the 5' ends of their loci.
At both ends of the locus are genes involved in the addition of heptose to the oligosaccharides and the encoded proteins are similar to those of other Epsilonproteobacteria (Table S2).
