When I707L Klencountersounters pairs of adenosines at high temperatures, the enzyme can still become temporarily blocked, but we hypothesize that high temperatures allow the enzyme to return back to the open conformation quickly.
We propose that, at low temperature, the I707L mutant is slowed each time it encounters pairs of adenosines (or possibly purines generally) due to the blockage of the active site by the template DNA.
Then, due to the fact that at the beginning | I| = | J| = 2 x, it is easy to see that the recurrence encounters pairs of intervals I, J such that either | I| = | J| or | I| = 2| J|.

Given the low repeatability of female responsiveness in extra-pair trials and the large effect of male attractiveness (see above), plus the fact that males did not court females at all in 15% of the extra-pair trials, clearly more than four extra-pair encounters per social pairing would have been required to obtain a repeatable copulation record.
