PROFIBUS is an international standard (IEC 61158, EN 50170) for factory-floor communications, with several thousands of installations worldwide.
We evaluated tool qualification requirements for hazard and risk analysis software tools, particularly for tools supporting System-Theoretic Process Analysis (STPA), and compared the tool qualification approaches of safety standards IEC 61508, EN 50128, DO-178C/DO-330 and ISO 26262.
Some organizations have developed practical standards in specific fields such as the European standard ETSI EN 300 132-3-1 [12], IEEE Standard 946 [13] and IEC SG4 [14], which are respectively designed for data/telecom systems, DC auxiliary power systems and LVDC distribution systems.
Metering protocols like IEC 62056 (IEC 1107) or EN 1434-3 (M-Bus) were mostly designed for simple point-to-point readout of electronic meters.
The international standards applicable are IEC 60826, 'Design criteria for overhead lines', EN 50341 'Overhead lines exceeding 45 kV' and EN 50423 'Overhead electrical lines exceeding AC 1 kV up to and including AC 45 kV'.

EN 50128 (Boulanger 2015), is a European derivative standard of IEC 61508 (Brown 2000) which focuses on safety management techniques specifically for design and development of railway applications.
BS EN 62061 is the closest to being the sector specific standard to IEC 61508 and is intended to provide functional safety guidance for the design of safety-related electrical and electronic control systems for machinery and covers the whole life-cycle as covered in IEC 61508.
The new IEC 60261 has provided an approximate alignment of SIL ratings with the safety categories as defined by EN 954.
