In "War of the Worlds: What About Peace?," Bruno Latour, a French theorist, argues that to achieve world peace the West must first acknowledge that it has long been at war, albeit covertly, a war masquerading as the "peaceful extension of Western natural Reason" to "the many Empires of Evil".
However, humankind cannot bear much tranquillity, and now, a quarter of a century later, in a new Age of Catastrophe, the land of the brave finds itself "crouching," in Philip Larkin's shudder-inducing phrase, "under Extinction's alp", as multiple empires of evil square up against it.
The best, "Empire of Evil," was shot this spring and was, like many of his works, made with his students at the San Francisco Art Institute.
