The Italian opera houses of Parma, Florence, Venice, Bologna and Milan, through the distributor Emerging Pictures, are beaming their productions.
Emerging Pictures, a distributor of European fare, is beaming eight live ballets from the Royal Ballet in London, the Paris Opera Ballet and the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.
Emerging Pictures also transmits shows from the Glyndebourne Festival in England and the Salzburg Festival in Austria as well as from the opera house in Valencia, Spain.
Their dark conical shapes and beams of color are derived from a photograph of cut-out poster board taken in the studio; they share qualities both with Franz Klein's abstractions of the '50s and the abstract photographs made by James Welling, an emerging Pictures artist, in the late '70s.
Curiously, it was not the Bolshoi Theater that announced the cancellation, but Emerging Pictures, the United States distributor for the films of the Bolshoi Ballet and Opera, which was scheduled to present a screening of Mr. McGregor's "Rite" on April 21.
Many European opera companies turned to Emerging Pictures, a New York-based company that was founded in 2003 to distribute high density transmissions of independent films and special events, including rock concerts, dance and even opera.
