Hobbes fled to Paris after writing The Elements of Law, but had to flee back to England a decade later.
Shortly after completing The Elements of Law, he fled to Paris, where he rejoined Mersenne's circle and made contact with other exiles from England.
But he was also Ben Jonson's patron and the dedicatee of Thomas Hobbes's "Elements of Law"; he commissioned paintings from Van Dyck and wrote his own poetry and plays.
