'egotistic' is a correct and usable word in written English.
You can use it when referring to someone who excessively admires themselves and takes more credit than they are due. For example, "Simon's egotistic behaviour often got him into trouble as he claimed credit for other people's work".
People are also more self-directed (or egotistic).
