This technique involves mixing of the necessary biochemicals with the column effluent just before the fractionation process (Fig. 2c) and microfractionation, that is fractionation in a seconds rather than minutes time frame, to retain the high-resolution chromatographic separation.
Results show that the isotopic fractionation between effluent and influent phosphate at early stage of transport could be ~ 1.3‰ at higher flow rates with isotopically-light phosphate (P16O4) preferentially retained in the sediment column.
Comparison of the direct injection method with total analysis after aqua regia digestion shows that slurry injection of the dilute samples in the gravitational field-flow fractionation (GrFFF) effluent is quite efficient in these samples.
Previous work on the fractionation of STW effluent, however, identified the steroid estrogens as the most potent estrogens, making this theoretical possibility highly unlikely.

Fractionation of coronary IPC effluent revealed that cytoprotective humoral mediator(s) released during the conditioning phase were of hydrophobic nature as all hydrophobic fractions with molecules under 30 kDa significantly reduced infarct size versus the control and hydrophilic fraction-treated hearts (P < 0.05).
Further fractionation of the total hydrophobic effluent into low and high molecular weight fractions, with either a 10 or 30 kDa cut-off, revealed that both 10 kDa fractions, but only the low weight fractions of 30 kDa cut-off, retained the ability to offer cardioprotection comparable to the cytoprotection afforded by the total hydrophobic faction (Fig. 6).
The AgNP concentration and AgNP size in the effluent were analyzed using flow field-flow fractionation mainly.
