"It's a solid study," says Nick Haddad, an ecologist at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, "and it's unique in that nobody's looked at the effects of corridors on gene flow".

Yet, to our knowledge, there are no studies that have examined the genetic effects of corridors from a community-level perspective.

Such corridors have been well studied from an ecological perspective (Gilbert-Norton et al. 2010), but little work has examined the genetic effects of corridors that connect habitat patches.

From a management perspective, the benefits provided by increased genetic resilience will have to be carefully weighed against any potential negative ecological effects of corridors (Haddad et al. 2014; Resasco et al. 2014).

The results presented here demonstrate the mitigating effects of corridors on the negative genetic effects associated with habitat fragmentation are achieved through two mechanisms: the exchange of individuals between patches and the reduction in genetic drift.

Thus, we recommend that managers connect habitat patches with corridors that are as wide as possible, but caution that if the quality of the corridors differs substantially from the habitat patches, then some of the potential mitigating effects of corridors may be lost.

We compared mammal use of riparian forests within both continuous and highly fragmented forests, and examined the effects of corridor width, corridor habitat structure, and landscape context on mammal species richness, composition, and functional diversity, all of which were higher in continuous forests than in riparian remnants.

The approach permits us to get a unique insight into the link between landscape complexity and population dynamics by separating the effects of corridor availability, landscape configuration and composition using landscapes with modified patch shapes.

We also examined the effects of corridor quality by varying the rates of mortality within the corridors.

Evidence for a beneficial effect of corridors on species richness and abundance in habitat patches is mixed.

Assuming mortality independent of the season, and assuming the corridors merely increase migration rates between patches, only a very weak beneficial effect of corridors was possible in simulations.
