Data on the highest completed education were available annually from 1998 to 2008 from the Norwegian Educational Database administered by Statistics Norway.
The following databases supported by EBSCO, an educational database vendor, were searched for articles published from 1980 to 2010: Academic Search Complete, ERIC, Masterfile Premier, Education Research Complete, Professional Development Collection, Psychology and Behavior Science Collection, PsychINFO, Topic Search, and Science and Technology Collection.
Statistics Norway used unique personal id-numbers to link the Central Population Registry to educational data from the 1960 census, and from 1970, with data from the National Educational Database (NUDB).
A total of 86 children were identified from both sources: 30 children with classical childhood autism, 15 with atypical autism and 23 with Asperger's syndrome: 18 of the ASD cases from the educational database could not be classified, as they were not subject to a multidisciplinary assessment.
