Information on educational attainment, childhood adversity, Service branch, role in parent unit and engagement type were obtained at phase 1 (via the self-completion questionnaires).
Estimates of these conditions in most high-income countries fall between 3.5% and 8.0% of children aged 0 18 years, with some countries reporting that prevalence is increasing. 1 Although children with these conditions can lead rich and fulfilling lives, many experience poor educational outcomes, 2 social adversity, 3 lower levels of social participation 4 and sometimes pain.
Serious conflicts within the family, parental mental health problems and the respondent's own serious or chronic illness were not associated with the respondent's own educational level, and these childhood adversities were therefore removed from further analysis.
On the one hand, this suggests that functional limitations and educational qualification may be additional intermediate factors linking childhood adversity and quality of life for both men and women.
