This framework describes three essential elements in smart education: smart environments, smart pedagogy, and smart learner.
The following discussion offers a critical examination of the smart in smart education, smart learning and smart learning environments (SLE) in two steps.

Smart technologies are helping improve the quality of human life in all aspects, e.g., the way humans are transported ("smart mobility"), the way we live ("smart homes"), the way we communicate with each other ("smart communications"), the way we manage our health ("smart health"), and the way we are educated ("smart education"), among others.
As Education 2.0 looms, we're seeing a rise of remote learning, self-education, smart software, all of which is allowing people to learn and to teach at their own pace — inside the classroom or out.
