A section of Macqueen's book is devoted to the editor's furious memos, handwritten on pink paper.
In January, Lionel Barber, the paper's editor, sent a memo to the staff, detailing a plan to "ensure that we are serving a digital platform first and a newspaper second".
"Eventually, N.S.A. became the sole editor," the memo says.
"In the sports and entertainment segments, the senior news editors will report directly to the G.M. while retaining a strong reporting relationship to the editor and managing editor," the memo said.
"I think it is the great source document of life among the beat or hip generation," Cowley told fellow editors in a memo dated 20 October 1953.
