This three-volume first edition, below, published in 1816, was one of 12 presentation copies that the publisher, John Murray, allotted to Austen for friends and family.
He makes similar innovative distinctions when discussing the different types of human and divine willing, where his voluntarist opinions are quite interesting (Reportatio I, dd. 45 48: see the critical edition cited below; Alliney 2006b; Robiglio 2006).
Through its comically enraged narrator, it focuses on iconic objects – Brother Lawrence's plants and his precious eating utensils, the cloister itself (probably Dominican – see the link to the footnoted edition below) and its trivialising, life-denying rituals.

Formerly in possession of the Matsudaira clan, rulers of the Saijō Domain in Iyo Province, this scroll is referred to as "Matsudaira clan edition" or after its finder as "Former Morikawa edition" (not to be confused with the Morikawa edition below which refers to the Morikawa family).
