This three-volume first edition, below, published in 1816, was one of 12 presentation copies that the publisher, John Murray, allotted to Austen for friends and family.
Through its comically enraged narrator, it focuses on iconic objects – Brother Lawrence's plants and his precious eating utensils, the cloister itself (probably Dominican – see the link to the footnoted edition below) and its trivialising, life-denying rituals.
