Implementation of e-learning modules requires pre-assessment of infrastructure and learners' characteristics.

E-learning modules could either be uploaded on the Internet or on the Intranet.

Interestingly, e-learning modules were rated relatively poorly and less effective than self-directed study from textbooks, whereby it has to be mentioned that third year students in particular had very little exposure to e-learning modules (see Fig. 4).

Currently available e-learning modules do not meet the students' learning needs and there is a call for reliable, up-to-date open access electronic resources.

The medical students we questioned were not impressed by freely available e-learning modules and over a third of third year students had no exposure to online modules.

Interestingly, the evaluation of self-directed e-learning modules showed a graph looking very similar to a normal distribution (see Fig. 2).

The intervention group was assigned the e-learning modules.

In addition, our comparison intervention contained similar content to the e-learning modules.

When necessary the general programme was supplemented with individual coaching and E-learning modules.
