This organism experienced a recent whole-genome duplication event [ 13] that, together with smaller segment duplications provided material for comparison of duplicated genes of different origin.

Phylogenetic reconstruction confirmed that Oncopeltus vasa is nested within other insect vasa genes (supplementary material Fig. S2A), and that Oncopeltus piwi belongs to the PIWI sub-family containing the Drosophila genes piwi and aubergine (which are Drosophila-specific duplications) (supplementary material Fig. S2B).
