The duplication span of complete duplicates (n = 64 pairs) ranged from 330 – 10,646 bp with a median value of 1958 bp.
Moreover, some organisms present a duplication of the complete uvrC gene (Clostridium acetobutylicum and Listeria).
Therefore, a duplication of the complete genome is more likely than the duplication of a very large fragment.
With respect to small segmental duplication (SSD) events, the frequency of complete gene duplicates (entire duplication of an ancestral ORF) can be highly variable; 39 % in C. elegans [ 13], 41-44 % in Drosophila species [ 14, 16] and 89 % in Saccharomyces cerevisiae [ 15].
From the 35 chromosome aberrations, KOBB060876, KOBB060886, KOBB060889 and KOBB060890 showed complete duplication of chromosome 12, and KOBB060886 showed complete duplication of chromosome 5 (Table S1).
Hence, the high prevalence of complete duplication events within our data set of young human gene duplicates may be explained by human duplicons having lengthier tracts, although the role of purifying selection against shorter duplication tracts yielding partial and chimeric duplicates cannot be ruled out.
This suggests a loss of paralogs after or between the two rounds of complete duplication in vertebrates (additional file 1, Figure SM4).

A large scale duplication of this gene family may be explained by the teleost-specific genome duplication event (3R) occurring early in the evolution of teleost fish, which followed two rounds of complete genome duplication (2R) observed early in the evolution of the vertebrate lineage [ 28].
